Bulging or Herniated Discs? How to Heal Them the McKenzie Way
Bulging or herniated discs can seriously affect your quality of life, but physical therapy can help. My name’s Jeremy, and I’m one of the physical therapists here at Full Potential Physical Therapy. Today, I wanted to talk to you a little bit about disc bulges and disc herniations.
Symptoms of Bulging or Herniated Discs
These are common injuries that can cause neck pain and back pain, as well as pain that radiates into your arms and legs. The pain can be severe, and imaging findings showing disc related issues can be a scary thing for people to discover.
The good news is that most of the time, through physical therapy, we can help reduce and oftentimes even resolve the pain that is associated with a herniated or bulging disc. Only about 5% of these cases end up needing surgery.
How the McKenzie Method Treats Bulging or Herniated Discs
The McKenzie method is a system of evaluation and treatment that helps identify, specifically, what types of exercises are going to be best for you to reduce the pain that is associated with a disc bulge or herniation. These exercises will not only help reduce the pain but will allow the disc itself to heal.
I am certified in the McKenzie method, and I’ve been using it for the past 10 years to help people with disc related injuries. I also work on a team with a physical therapist assistant named Kristen, and she has been using the Mackenzie method for over 13 years.
